FOOD FIGHT, A TEACHING MOMENT

Whatever you think about the obesity problem in this country, I can’t imagine anyone would want it for themselves. A survey some years ago asked obese people this simple question: If you could be given a million dollars or be made a normal weight, which would you choose? Well over 95% just wanted to be a normal weight and live a normal life. So maybe we have to go to an abnormal diet, because it’s been shown that kids eating school lunches have a far higher rate of obesity than kids that don’t. This kid is going to be a lethargic kid, he’s going to be a less attentive kid, and he’s going to be a less educated kid. And when the Obama Administration said that this is the civil rights issue of this generation’s education, they are so right. High sodium, high fat foods are so wrong. Just food for thought when you hear about the educational food fight. We think if he were around, John Belucci from Animal House would agree.

HIRE EDUCATION

Lately the GAO (Government Accounting Office) at the behest of the Obama administration is examining these for profit universities and the degrees of their degree. The fact is these online folks appear to be giving people a line. One example is; a basic massage course from a junior college goes for $500.00 and from these folks as much as $14,000.00. This is truly “hire education” as in they are being hired but how much education are people getting? A number of these as Stephen Colbert pointed out are owned by very reputable parent companies, for instance Goldman Sachs or as they are officially known to Fauxvians as Goldman Sacks and Plunders and now if you attempt to buy your education from those folks you’ll have plundered because (to repeat), these for profit universities online are giving you a line. Truly hire education

THE RIGHT LEFT EARLIER

In a pre-Christmas vote, the Senate passed the Obama health care reform bill. The last time a Senate vote was done on Christmas eve was 104 years ago in 1895. Like social security in 1935 and Medicare in 1965, this will one day be considered a "groundbreaking" piece of legislation. Unlike in those votes however, this time were no Republican crossovers who voted to support this bill. What does that tell us? That the needs of the American people (however slowly) are being met, and those needs are not left, and it tells us what the right has left namely the American people. Interestingly,m the vote was 60-39 (not 60-40) because 1 Republican left early for Christmas and didn't even bother to vote. Surely he would tell you that the future of this nation hangs on stopping this bill, as long as he didn't have to be there to do it.

THE GOP GETS TO NO BY BEING SLOW

Senator Mitch McConnell is of course criticizing the Obama administration's efforts to reform health care and admitted that the Republicans did everything they could to slow down the process of passing the bill. They wanted to go slowly (if at all) prompting us to nickname them the "party of slow". Interestingly, a bit of history about the party of slow and particularly Sen. McConnell; One of his major objections is that this bill will cut Medicare (actually it's a 21% drop in doctors fees in the coming year). Yet Mr. McConnell's record as a leader of the party of slow regarding Medicare; In 1995 he voted for 270 billion dollars in cuts over 7 years. In 1996 he voted for an additional 158 billion in cuts over 6 years. In 1997 he wanted to slow the growth some more and voted again for 393 billion in cuts. In the party of slow Mitch McConnell is the lead turtle.

ORNAMENTAL ARGUMENTS

The Obama administration has been "caught" sending ornaments from previous administrations to school children. And it gets worse; they were red and gold, and the children had to decorate them however they want. The Obama administartion has been accused of "brainwashing" because the only way to really wash a brain thoroughly is letting people do what they want and think on their own, a real cleansing. No worries, however...the right jumped in to save the day. The pointed out the flaws in this Obama scheme. Obviously, letting kids do what they want is brainwashing, and teachers have to drive with these ornaments in their cars which puts them at risk, and yet even more fascinating; in an interview with Samantha Bee, a Republican critic said that due a socialist Obama policy EVERYBODY is getting a present at Christmas time. When Samatha Bee pointed out that Jews have Chanukah, this critic said agreed adding "sure, all 12 days of Jewish Chanukah". You cant make these people up, but sometimes you wish they were made up. Intellectually, these people are kind of ornamental.

STREAMING THE SCREAMERS

Let’s take a close look at who the “screamers” are at the recent town hall health care debates and how to respond to them. The Obama administration has to keep pointing out the savings and the assurance for people who already have health care. These people are worried about it costing too much and they worry about losing it, so Obama has to hammer that point home. And as far as the screamers, not to be harsh on them but whichever group is funding them is isn’t the anti-obesity program. Sadly, a higher percentage of people that have health care turn out to vote than those who don’t, so the pitch must be thus made.

HEALTH INSURANCE; HOW HEALTHY IS YOURS?

The Obama whitehouse has misfired in selling their health plan. They were talking to the 80% of American who already have health care, and hoping they would be concerned with those who don’t have it. Sad to say, humans are selfish, Americans are humans, and therefore we are a selfish country. However if you do have health care keep in mind that it is only as good as your employment status and your health pre-conditions. Because if your company goes under or you lose your job and you have any type of pre-existing condition it might just make it a bit easier to see things from the administrations prospective and good luck getting insurance. In terms of the insurance industry, consider this; which other industry has 20% of their employees there only to make sure they DON’T do their job (paying for claims)? Imagine if 20% of the police or fire department was there to ensure that calls were not responded to. Scary, huh?

BUDGET DELAYED, HOW ‘BOUT BUDGET BETRAYED

The Obama administration has announced that the budget report will be held off until the middle of next month, a little later than due. The GOP is complaining that they are delaying, but somehow they didn’t realize something interesting about the Bush administration’s handling of their last several budgets. Since they “weren’t sure” about the clause for Iraq and Afghanistan, they put in zero. There’s a big difference between a budget briefly delayed than one permanently betrayed. We have the deficits to prove it.

ALL VICE ALL THE TIME

Dick Cheney is constantly on the news these days talking about how this country is less safe because of the policies of the Obama administration. The CIA and Al-Qaeda beg to differ, because it seems that Al-Qaeda is now becoign marginalized to smaller areas of Pakistan due to the drone activity provided by the CIA, and they are becoming less and less able to strike the west. In all of 2008 (under Bush) only 16 drone strikes were done and there were 32 already this year. Apparently they have been effective and reduced severely the extremist capabilities. Not to piss off the Pakistanis, but it appears that they and teh extemists are both more frustrated by Obamas successful planning.

A PANIC ATTRACT

The Obama administration has been displaying its habit of using very calming language instead of very alarming of even disgusting language (case in point; H1N1 virus instead of “swine flu”). Nevertheless, we are seeing that less hysterical descriptions are resulting in more reasoned responses. The reason is because when we are led by a mature government, we tend to mature as a nation and act more responsibly. Wait, this just in…Egypt is killing every pig in their country…to be continued

NO ED. AHEAD

Of all the 3 big initiatives of President Obama (health care, education, the housing crisis) we feel the Republicans will resist the most strongly to education reform. Most of them are older and have no personal stake and more importantly we have heard form the CPAC convention the Republican code word for an educated voter; Democrat.

ORSZAG DOESN’T ZIG

Give Peter Orszag (Director, Office of Management and budget in the Obama Administration) credit; when confronted by George Stephanopoulos about the fact that their budget projections were followed by the release of the drop in gross national product development last quarter he had the best answer anyone could give. He said “isn’t it a good idea that we acted so quickly” because this sore doesn’t get any better if you don’t treat it (not with voodoo economics but) with antibiotic economics.

24 CARROT BOLD

Our guess is that President Obama is going to continue reaching out to the Republicans using the carrot rather than the stick, at least for a certain amount of time. And we are going to predict that time is "24" because 1. its such a nice complete number and 2. Its the name of a series that all the conservatives like on Fox and 3. Its the only time any of the conservatives were comfortable with a black President. We predict that at some point Obama is going to suggest that every member of Government (including himself take a month without salary, and just like the Lily Ledbetter law when the only lawmakers voting against it were Republicans, we predict that virtually all the elected officials that will refuse to give up their salary for the American people will be Republicans. Maybe we will be proven wrong and these people will act patriotic instead of only talking patriotic. We haven't seen this yet, but we are on the look out for what we will call President Obama's "24 carrot bold".
